Thai expert phonetics

Thai is one of the most difficult languages in the world. People who would like to speak and understand Thai do not necessarily want to deal with its complex alphabet. Nevertheless, a language school needs some way of producing proper learning material in a timely manner.

Thai Expert is a Thai language school based in Berne. The future focus of the company is to move from frontal, on-site teaching to a modern online solution allowing people to study from everywhere. Thai words change their meaning depending on the pitch of the voice when pronouncing a vocal. Thai Expert came up with a phonetic notation to show what pitch a vocal should be pronounced with but doesn't have a way to use it on a computer. They print the learning material and go through it by hand to add the phonetic signs where needed. This process is extremely error-prone and time-consuming.
As specific as the problem description is today, it was rather broad in the beginning. The project team had to deal with a lot of uncertainty when trying to define project milestones. Therefore, it has been agreed upon an agile project structure (Scrum) with client meetings every three weeks, to ensure the project stays on track and results can be delivered.
Thai Expert has been provided with a customized keyboard layout and font including their phonetics. Now being able to write the phonetics on a computer enables them to write and print complete course material, dictionaries or books. Furthermore, the font is fully PDF and web compatible making sure they can use it in future projects. Additionally, Thai Expert has been provided with recommendations on what their next steps should be in order to achieve their business objective.
