This bachelor thesis focuses on the establishment of a guide, which will help start ups to navigate through the complex and demanding scaling phase. Where there are numerous frameworks, plans, checklists, guides, and other supporting sources when it comes to creating and founding a business, there seems to be a lack when it comes to the scaling stage. The challenges and opportunities start ups encounter regarding their different core and supporting departments are studied and analysed. These objectives are a result of the following research question: What challenges and opportunities do start ups encounter while scaling up and which business units are affected?
To reach the research goal various methods, namely literature review and case studies, were used. In a first step the literature review, comprised of secondary resources, was conducted. The authors gathered information from books, journals and reports dealing with entrepreneurship and growth, which elaborate on the challenges faced while scaling. Based on the literature review the authors generated a questionnaire. This questionnaire was then used to gather the necessary data for the three case studies comparing theory with practical inputs. The analyses and combination of both methods resulted in the creation of a scale up plan that can be used for consulting purposes.
The authors concluded that each department is affected and is equally important. Marketing and sales are the two departments where resources are getting added first to have a demand which justifies scaling. Other departments than adjust to the changed situation. The biggest challenge, which start ups are facing, is finding the right em-ployees, especially in the production department. Other challenges are transferring competences from the founder to the employees and having the right CRM and ERP solution software. Growth aspirations of the analysed case studies were intentional; however, no frameworks were used as a preparation. Reasons for this are lack of knowledge, time, or appropriateness. Nevertheless, it was recommended that priorities of tasks and business units are analysed and to keep the focus on the estab-lished priority list. The biggest opportunity is exploiting international differences and focusing on bigger international markets. Another important advice is to network. Re-lationships and connections can lead to new customers, employees, investors and other resources. The established scale up plan aims to support start ups in preparation for the scale up phase.
