Adaptive Digital Support for Sustained Goal Attainment
Despite a growing market of self-improvement tools, many people who set personal goals fail to sustain them, with the difficulty lying less in forming intentions than in translating them into action across the changing phases of goal pursuit. Existing digital goal- and habit-tracking applications largely rely on uniform reminders and gamified, pressureoriented mechanics, and none adjust the type of support to the user's current phase.

This thesis addresses that gap by designing and evaluating a user-centered, phase-adaptive goal-attainment application.
Following a Design Science Research approach operationalised through Design Thinking, a functional prototype (KisoGoals) was built and evaluated with a small, purposively sampled group of young adults over two iterations, complemented by anexpert interview. The artifact detects whether a goal is in a starting, active, stalled or finalpush phase and adapts its coaching accordingly, while always offering the option to simplify the current step, and maintaining a deliberately calm, non-punitive experience.
Participants evaluated the prototype as desirable, useful and largely usable, valuing the non-punitive design in particular; their feedback drove iterative refinements to the core features. The work contributes a functional instantiation, a transferable phase-detection logic and five design principles for calm, phase-adaptive goal support. Its desirability is well supported and its core technically feasible, while long-term adherence effects and commercial viability remain open questions for future validation.
