Market Study China: The Application of Safety Mats and Safety Edges in Industrial Applications

A Swiss manufacturer of tactile safety components – namely safety mats and safety edges – built production capacity in China. This thesis identifies where demand in China can realistically be generated, and reviews whether the made assumptions behind their investment decision still hold.

The client localised production in China to shorten lead times and improve price competitiveness for the Chinese market. One year on, the output stood substantially below the planned volume. Capacity and technical product fit were not the constraint. What was missing was demand. The company knew the total size of the market it was targeting, but not how that market divided across applications, industries, customer groups and sales channels, nor where its products held an advantage that competitors could not easily match.
The study is a qualitative single-case analysis combining internal company documents, systematic desk research including Chinese-language sources, and three expert interviews giving an internal, an end-user and an independent view. Twenty-five applications were screened and sized, competitors and substitute technologies profiled on a common template, and five candidate industries scored on six weighted criteria, reported under two weighting schemes and tested with sensitivity analyses. Buying centres, channels and the investment assumptions were assessed against realised records.
One industry ranks first clearly, leading under both weighting schemes and all five sensitivity tests. Its position comes from a mandatory national safety requirement. Reading the policy in Chinese produced the main finding: it contains two separate device requirements, and the products dominating the current market address only on of them. The other requirement fits the client's safety product directly. The opening is real, technically well matched and currently uncaptured. The investment review found the assumptions split into two groups. Those resting on physical capability hold; those resting on demand generation fail. The achieved selling price meets plan while cost does not, placing the entire shortfall on cost: assembly had been localised while the materials determining that cost had not.The client receives a ranked target list, a documented non-pursuit list, application-level assessments of where its advantage is defensible rather than easily copied, a map of where specification decisions are actually made, and a prioritised research agenda. A profitable price point was also shown to exist already inside the client's own order book.
