Design Thinking in Defence - Adapting Design Thinking Frameworks and Methods for Use across the Swiss Armed Forces

This thesis examines the potential to increase the adoption of Design Thinking methods among novice practitioners within the Swiss Armed Forces by analysing the challenges they face when applying Design Thinking, adapting an existing Design Thinking framework to address these challenges, and developing a lightweight artifact to communicate the framework to potential users.

Following a Design Science Research approach, the problem addressed in this study is informed by findings from semi-structured interviews with four practitioners and three project coaches, as well as one conducted observation. The results identify twelve key challenges across methodological, organisational, and cultural dimensions that novice practitioners encounter when applying Design Thinking in the context of the Swiss Armed Forces.Based on these challenges, five design principles are derived, leading to the development of an adapted framework grounded in the Double Diamond model and supported by nine selected tools. The framework is subsequently operationalised through a Design Thinking manual.
The findings of the evaluation were based on qualitative data from three semi-structured interviews with potential users and one expert. These findings outline the positive perception of the handbook and methodological soundness of the underlying framework. The study concludes that while adapting Design Thinking frameworks for novice practitioners is essential for accessibility and initial adoption, sustainable and effective implementation requires complementary training, facilitation, and organisational support to cultivate Design Thinking as an embedded organisational capability rather than a standalone methodological artifact.
