As we move into the digital age the way we conduct our academic work has changed dramatically due to the number of digital distractions, lack of access to quiet study rooms and limited access to space for long-term, indepth concentration and continuity in their studies and for researchers in the humanities. In Switzerland, while there are many opportunities available for professional growth and co-working, the focus has been more on convenience open hours for use of space, easy access to services.
Utilizing historical research of the Renaissance studiolo as well as perspectives of environmental psychology, creativity studies and service design, the data was collected with several means including: desk research, a Swiss market analysis of study and retreat facilities, and through online surveys and interviews with student, a doctoral candidate and professors. After collecting this information, the analysis have been made through the application of the Service Marketing Triangle and the Value Proposition Canvas to identify user requirements.
The results show that there is a notable absence of a place for individuals to have a long-term low-occupancy study space within Switzerland, participants in a survey and interview expressed their desire for a dedicated, quiet, analogue, and continuous study environment.
Studiolo 2.0 will provide a unique non-commercial specialised retreat, as opposed study retreat and traditional library formats. Deliberately, its mission is to support sustained focus while also providing individuals with the opportunity to enhance one’s potential through intellectual engagement with humanist ideals. The results indicate that Studiolo 2.0 offers a well supported rationale and precedent for implementation as a non-profit service organisation in the current educational and cultural environment. Studiolo 2.0 offers the empirical information necessary to support the continued development of Studiolo 2.0 into a modern intellectual space for studies.
