Schatz Verlag GmbH has traditionally financed its digital teaching materials through sponsorships, enabling free or low-cost access for teachers. Increasing difficulties in securing sponsors have made this model uncertain. At the same time, digital content is easy to copy and share, and teachers expect fast, user-friendly access. The client therefore faced the strategic question of whether a paywall could ensure financial sustainability without undermining usability, legal compliance, or acceptance among teachers.
The project focused on analysis and evaluation instead of technical implementation. The study assessed the technical feasibility of different paywall options. It also examined protection methods, costs, and business models that work with the existing PHP-based website and a possible WordPress membership system. Desk research on paywall solutions was combined with cost and break-even analyses. User acceptance and willingness to pay were evaluated through an online survey and six structured interviews with teachers.
The project provides Schatz Verlag GmbH with a clear, evidence-based foundation for decisions on monetizing its digital teaching materials. It shows that introducing a paywall is a feasible and low-risk option when implemented gradually with a strong focus on user-friendliness. A technically viable hybrid solution was identified that combines WordPress for user management and payment processing with the existing website, avoiding a complete system rebuild and keeping implementation effort low.
The evaluation of solutions resulted in a concrete recommendation for pilot testing based on low setup and fixed costs. The project also offers realistic guidance on content protection through a layered approach that balances technical, legal, and organizational measures rather than aiming for full protection.
Market and financial analyses provide practical insights into willingness to pay, preferred pricing models, and revenue potential. Overall, the results reduce implementation risks and support informed strategic and financial decisions, creating a solid basis for generating income from digital educational content.
