Barriers to the Adoption of Electronic Leaflets in Health Care

Adopting electronic leaflets (e-leaflets) has been hailed as a transformative step towards improving patient safety and enhancing communication between healthcare providers and patients. Despite the recognized benefits, there needs to be more understanding regarding why patients prefer traditional methods. Research on patient attitudes toward receiving information electronically and the challenges of using e-leaflets is limited. Existing studies have not adequately examined the factors such as access to technology, digital literacy, ease of use, compatibility issues, information privacy and lack of awareness influencing user behavior or proposed effective measures to reduce resistance and encourage acceptance.

This study aims to investigate the key obstacles and challenges that may impede the large-scale adoption of e-leaflets to replace traditional paper-based patient information leaflets. The adoption of electronic leaflets is too broad and multifaced with the involvement of several stakeholders, such as patients, healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and technology providers. Therefore, this study will focus on the following research question: What barriers and challenges impede patient adoption of electronic leaflets?
The study will adopt a qualitative approach to address this question. It will begin by reviewing the existing literature on the benefits of current practices, electronic leaflets, past case studies, and challenges that may impede their adoption. Subsequently, the study will conduct semi-structured interviews with patients to gain insights into their perspectives and experiences regarding the barriers hindering the adoption of e-leaflets.
The findings from the literature review and patient interviews will provide a comprehensive understanding of the obstacles and challenges that may hinder the widespread adoption of e-leaflets by patients and the general population using medicines.
