Modelling Support for Agile and Digitalised Business Processes

In a digital world, the separation of business and IT processes is not appropriate anymore. Instead, the integration of business and IT is essential to establish consistent processes. Traditional business process management (BPM) often follows a waterfall approach and separate design and implementation, leading to misalignments and limited adaptability to change.

To address these issues, this thesis adapts the BPM lifecycle that integrates design and implementation. An agile modelling technique is designed to improve BPM by fostering close collaboration between business and IT. On the one hand, the modelling technique consists of a procedure that combines design and implementation as a coherent element and complements agile principles. Furthermore, a modelling language was developed in ADOxx, which extends the BPMN model with an application architecture model to complement the IT perspective and establish a shared understanding.
By incorporating architecture into process models, business and IT can collaborate to develop solutions based on a shared understanding, mitigating the risk of misalignment and inconsistencies. This thesis employed a multi-method qualitative approach, integrating various qualitative methods to comprehensively answer the defined research questions.
Ultimately, the thesis shows how agile principles can enable a continuous, collaborative, and consistent BPM practice. The result is a modelling technique that allows organisations to respond quickly to change while maintaining alignment between business and IT.
