A significant share of global HNW and UHNW wealth will change hands in the coming decades. Private banks face the risk of losing client relationships during these transitions, especially when heirs choose new advisors. This bachelor thesis investigates non-financial factors influencing client continuity in intergenerational wealth transfers.
This bachelor thesis combines an analysis of international academic research with interviews from senior wealth advisory professionals at a global bank. Using a qualitative framework, the findings were organised around relational and emotional barriers, identity development, and generational value change, alongside additional practitioner insights.
The analysis shows strong alignment between theory and practice in recognising trust, early engagement, and identity development as key to client retention among HNW and UHNW families. Practical examples highlight how values-based education, structured governance, and inclusive dialogue strengthen continuity. However, the bachelor thesis also uncovers challenges less discussed in the academic literature used, such as translating awareness into action and defining the advisor’s role in personal matters.
The findings emphasise that long-term client retention is not purely technical but relational. For private banks, fostering trust, shared purpose, and adaptability is essential to remain relevant across generations. These insights support financial institutions in refining their advisory approach, helping them safeguard both assets under management and lasting client relationships.
