As a global manufacturer of electric vehicle charging stations, ABB E-mobility faces complexity in managing product data across multiple
systems and sites. Historical legacy systems, inconsistent practices and a lack of formalized processes have resulted in inefficiencies, data quality issues and operational delays, particularly impacting sales, order handling and production planning.
The study combines theoretical insights from product lifecycle management and master data
governance with practical observations and semi-structured interviews conducted across
departments involved in the product ID creation process.
The as-is process of how a product ID is created at ABB E-mobility has been mapped, clarifying roles, responsibilities, system dependencies and process gaps across departments. This thesis makes several key contributions to understanding and improving the product ID creation process. Based on these insights, a proposed future process was developed. A central recommendation is to shift the Product Management-related activities from Jira to Oracle Fusion PLM, which would improve traceability, standardization and integration. In parallel, short-, mid-, and long-term recommendations are introduced, addressing process ownership, system alignment, master data governance and organizational change.
