AI Use Cases in Pharmacy Service Management to solve the shortage of skilled workforce in Switzerland: A Case Study at Galenica

The healthcare industry in Switzerland offers an abundance of chances, yet the competition, within such as small market, is fierce. The shortage of skilled workforce and subsequently the competition surrounding those few highly qualified employees are increasing. Whilst pharmacies need to retain their skilled workforce and find even more qualified personnel, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of each business process is key in order to remain attractive to potential candidates. Maintaining state of the art quality for patient services and excellence in the distribution of medication, in the correct dosage and for the desired effect, are vital to the pharmacy’s prowess.

What began in the Summer of 1956 at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire under John McCarthy has culminated in the beginning of the twenty-twenties. Artificial intelligence is not a new invention of the twenty first century, yet it has garnered an immense amount of public attention since the releases of DALL-E in January 2021 and ChatGPT in November of 2022. Artificial intelligence as an aid for employees and patients is shifting into focus for major players in the Swiss pharmaceutical market. While all kinds of data are generated in substantial quantities and are made accessible to support or optimize business processes, the potential enhancement of the patient value proposition shows promise but remains uncertain. However, enterprises lack the complete blueprints required to develop innovative use cases that enhance the value proposition, as well as the insights needed to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of these use cases.
The goal of this paper is to discover and assess use cases that driven by artificial intelligence for pharmacies in Switzerland in order to solve the problem of shortage of skilled workforce.
The findings indicate promising potential and lead to new possibilities that need to be explored further.
