This study investigates the negative implications of digitalisation on employees in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Switzerland. The literature review is organised into four key areas: (I) The Perceptions and Attitudes of Employees Towards Digitalisation, (II) How Digitalisation Redefines Employees' Job Responsibilities, (III) The Impact of Digitalisation on Job Satisfaction and Job Security, and (IV) The Effects of Digitalisation on Employees' Stress and Mental Health.
A qualitative research design was employed, utilising semi-structured interviews with ten employees from the Swiss ICT sector. The data was analysed through thematic analysis to identify key themes related to employee perceptions of digitalisation and its impact on their work and well-being.
The findings revealed that, contrary to concerns in the literature regarding job displacement due to automation, all participants reported feeling secure in their roles, with no one perceiving a threat from technological changes. However, participants did report challenges related to job stress, work intensification, and the blurring of work-life boundaries. The study concludes that, while digitalisation does not inherently undermine job security within the ICT sector, it introduces significant challenges regarding work-related stress and mental health. Organisations must address these concerns when implementing digital transformation strategies to safeguard the well-being and productivity of their workforce. The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the effects of digitalisation on employee well-being, particularly within the context of Switzerland's ICT sector.
