This thesis explores the integration of the Swiss E-ID into corporate Identity and Access Management processes, focusing on its feasibility, technical challenges, and potential impacts on organizational processes.
Using the Design Science Research methodology, the study combines systematic literature analysis, expert interviews, and prototype development to address the research questions. The prototype demonstrates the technical feasibility of integrating the Swiss E-ID with Microsoft Entra ID, highlighting the opportunities and challenges associated with interoperability, security, and compliance.
Key findings suggest that the Swiss E-ID has the potential to enhance Identity and Access Management systems by improving interoperability, fostering trust, and increasing efficiency. Verifiable credentials can streamline onboarding processes, minimize errors, and reinforce external collaborations. However, the research also highlights significant challenges, such as the absence of standardized claims and formats, issues with wallet compatibility, and missing definitions. Proposed solutions include the adoption of global standards for verifiable credentials, the establishment of a Swiss E-ID integration process, and the development of technical solutions to ensure interoperability within the Swiss E-ID ecosystem. The study concludes that integrating the Swiss E-ID into IAM systems has the potential to reduce complexity, enhance security, and improve operational efficiency, although some challenges remain. This thesis provides valuable insights for organizations looking to advance decentralized identity solutions while addressing the limitations of current IAM practices.
