In daily work life, the number of messages and inquires has significantly expanded due to the growing digitalization. However, being constantly available through a variety of communication channels can lead to information overload, overwhelming employees and resulting in stress, miscommunications, and decreased productivity. Brauchli + Partner AG tasked this thesis to develop a concept for their product “noff”, an online platform designed to create individual profiles. The goal was to make diverse communication styles visible and provide practical tips for enhancing workplace communication.
The bachelor thesis focused on a thorough literature review of models that methodically capture communication preferences. Based on this, a combination of the scientifically grounded Big Five model and the practical DISC model was selected. Prior to creating an Excel self-test, which contains questions on both models and in which the participants can indicate the extent to which they identify with the respective statements for each question, the approach with the two models was also validated by an expert.
The self-test creates instantly useable profiles that clearly show how people should communicate with each other by classifying participants based on their unique communication preferences. In addition to learning about potential barriers, users receive practical advices for each category, such as the dominance, initiative, steadiness, or the conscientiousness category. Furthermore, integrated compatibility analyses highlight common problems for every possible combination of the communication styles and offer helpful suggestions for improved teamwork. Brauchli + Partner AG is able to individually meet various communication demands and reduce conflicts beforehand in this way. With minimal effort, the profiles can also be included into the mentioned product “noff”, allowing teams to swiftly access the necessary information on the various communication types. The end effect are more efficient processes, fewer misunderstandings, and an overall more harmonious working environment.
