NMZ, dedicated to enriching public understanding of Swiss history and identity, has established a digital presence across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and its blog. However, the absence of a systematic approach to assessing the effectiveness and social impact of these initiatives highlighted the need for this framework's development. Operating under the framework of the Swiss Confederation's “Museums- und Sammlungsgesetz (MSG)”. NMZ has prioritised engaging diverse audiences through accessible and dynamic digital content.
To address this challenge, the project integrated theoretical insights from OECD/European Union frameworks and the "I-O-O-I" method from the Mercator foundation. The framework design was further enhanced through consultation with Swiss Radio and Television (SRF), where their innovative "impact points" model inspired the development of a customised impact score weighting system. This weighting system allowed for a detailed analysis of the contributions of various digital channels to the museum’s overall impact.
Data was gathered from surveys involving museum visitors, students, and online audiences, along-side analytics from NMZ’s digital platforms and external media reviews.
The analysis finished in an overall impact score of 89,009 points, illustrating NMZ’s success in fostering digital engagement. The museum’s blog emerged as the most impactful channel, contributing 62,691 points, followed by Instagram with 14,181 points, and Facebook with 9,882 points. External media reviews added 2,255 points, showcasing NMZ’s reach beyond its own platforms.
This framework equips NMZ with actionable insights into its digital strategy, establishing a baseline for future assessments. By leveraging survey findings, analytics, and the newly developed impact score weighting system, the museum can refine its approach to maximise cultural outreach and audience engagement. This project highlights NMZ’s dedication to utilising digital tools to amplify its educational and cultural mission, ensuring its continued relevance and impact in an increasingly digital world.
