Development of an Agile self-assessment maturity model for integration of teams with Legacy Systems in Agile Organizations

As organizations increasingly embrace agile methodologies to stay competitive and adaptive in today's dynamic business landscape, the integration of legacy systems presents a unique challenge. This thesis explores the development of an Agile self-assessment maturity model tailored specifically for teams working with legacy systems within agile organizations. The objective is to provide a framework that enables such teams to effectively evaluate and improve their digital capabilities, while also taking into account the constraints imposed by legacy systems. This paper incorporates the following thesis statement “It is possible to develop an Agile self-assessment maturity model, that supports the integration of teams with legacy systems in agile organizations.”.

The purpose of this research is to design a self-service tool that can help organizations with legacy systems and their stakeholders understand Agile Transformation better. That is done by proposing a conceptual design of “an online Agile Transformation self-assessment”. It offers an organized framework for evaluating several aspects that are vital to the performance of agile teams working with legacy systems. This artefact assists teams to evaluate their present status on agile way of working, identify areas for development, create a roadmap, and iteratively track their progress with the help of the maturity model. It considers a 360-degree perspective considering dimensions such as organisational excellence, customer centricity, operational excellence, and business model. The base model has been adopted from the Abili framework and tailored to the needs of agile organizations. This research project also contributed to the current body of literature as there was little existing research identified in terms of agile transformation in teams working with legacy systems. This thesis also looks at possible adoption plans and implementation instructions for the agile maturity model, considering the requirements and circumstances of agile teams working with legacy systems. The goal is to provide useful insights and recommendations to organizations looking to increase their agility while managing legacy systems.
The research is conducted utilizing contemporary sources from the literature on previous research on agile approaches, and legacy system management as well as an iterative approach featuring qualitative expert interviews.
The research findings highlight common challenges faced by teams working with legacy systems in an agile environment and the importance of organizational agility.
