Developing an Optimization Model to Suggest the Best Bag Drop Time at an Airport
In this thesis, an optimization model based on bag drop time assignment rules (considering departure time constraints, time interval constraints and whether the destination is in Schengen or non-Schengen area) is built to provide optimal bag drop times for passengers.

The two main parts of the research are 1) to understand passengers’ bag drop behaviour patterns and 2) to suggest an ideal bag drop time for each departure time and flight number combination. The overall aim of this is to reduce congestion in the check-in areas where the customers drop off their checked baggage.
A genetic algorithm-based model was employed to determine the optimal bag drop times. The output is two csv files that define the bag drop times both for economy and for premium customers. The analysis and the model provided valuable insights into the current bag drop process, including identifying the actual peak times. These findings highlight the potential for improved efficiency and passenger flow in the check-in areas, although practical implementation and adherence by passengers remain challenges.
The results suggest that real-world testing is necessary to know if the suggested times make a difference.
