With the rapid adoption of AI technologies like ChatGPT in educational settings, there is a need to understand how these tools affect student learning and academic performance. This study focuses on the integration of ChatGPT in a Business Communication 1 course, addressing the potential benefits and challenges of using AI to improve student engagement, writing skills, and overall learning outcomes.
The study employed an online survey, which was distributed to all business students at FHNW, encompassing all academic years. Additionally, a literature review was conducted using the following databases: Scopus, IEEE Explore Digital Library, Springer Link, and Taylor and Francis Online. This research explored how ChatGPT could be implemented into the Business Communication 1 course, analyzed its impact on various aspects of learning, and identified the advantages and disadvantages of implementing ChatGPT in an educational setting.
The results showed that ChatGPT significantly enhanced students’ writing skills and creativity. Students also benefited from the real-time feedback on their written work, which helped with their self-regulated learning. Students reported increased motivation and engagement, as ChatGPT encouraged active participation and collaboration. Additionally, ChatGPT provided students with a personalized learning experience. However, the research also highlighted challenges, such as concerns regarding academic integrity and the risk of over-reliance on AI-generated content. To balance the technological and pedagogical aspects, this study offers practical recommendations for educators teaching Business Communication 1. By leveraging the strengths of ChatGPT, educators could enhance learning outcomes, promote critical thinking, and prepare students for the digital future.
