Internationalisation at Home - Trend Analysis
Through internationalisation at home (IatH), students embark on a global journey where they can experience different cultures and worldviews from the comfort of their seats. It allows students to develop intercultural skills and broaden their horizons without the need for a physical exchange.

Based on a previous research paper, four different trends of IatH were found: business study initiatives, collaborative online international learning (COIL), service-provider approach and foreign language learning activities. The paper aims to indicate if the four trends found previously are still relevant or if there are new ones. Furthermore, the four trends are aimed to be explained in more detail. Moreover, the practical aspects are compared with the theory to see if those align with each other. This analysis allows insights into possible adaptations and improvements of IatH offerings.
First, research papers on the trends of IatH are read and summarised in the systematic literature review based on PRISMA. Second, desk research is done on a small sample (n=13) of universities to find out what they offer regarding IatH. Third, qualitative and semi-structured interviews (n=4) with universities and a service provider are conducted to get insights into the management aspects of IatH. The results of all three parts are analysed and compared to see if those four trends are the main ones or if there are others, as well as if the theory of IatH matches the practical considerations.
The research of this bachelor thesis indicates that the four trends of the previous research paper, namely business study initiatives, foreign language learning activities, collaborative online international learning (COIL) and the service-provider approach, remain relevant and can be considered the main trends of IatH. Especially COIL and foreign language learning activities are found in the literature, which shows that those two are considered particularly important and highlight their prominence in the field. Virtual reality and the multi-disciplinary approach are seen repeatedly in the literature, which could indicate that those two themes could be interesting and upcoming extensions to already existing IatH projects. The findings suggest that the theory matches with the practice; the practical aspects of the interviews as well as the desk research are reflected in the theory of the literature review on many occasions. The work of this bachelor thesis can help to adapt IatH programmes and use the new insights to improve the curriculum regarding IatH specifically to better integrate these evolving trends.
