Re-Commerce to ensure Circular Economy

Recent research indicates that the transformation process in Switzerland still needs to be advanced, with SMEs facing significant challenges and obstacles when shifting from a linear to a circular business model.

This master's thesis addresses the research question: ‘How can recommerce business models of Swiss medium-sized companies, using the example of Oris SA, support a circular economy?’.
By adopting a pragmatic philosophy and employing a qualitative research methodology, this study highlights the crucial role of the circular economy in sustainability efforts, pinpoints the obstacles in adopting circular business models, and delineates the significance of re-commerce in extending product life cycles and minimising waste. The thesis presents a comprehensive Design Science Research strategy for Oris SA, detailing a bespoke re-commerce model suited to the company's specific needs. Through an exhaustive review of literature, expert interviews, and qualitative analysis, the research identifies and discusses critical barriers to adopting circular economy practices, such as financial limitations, a general lack of consumer awareness regarding circular economy principles, and existing regulatory barriers.
The findings convincingly demonstrate how re-commerce can substantially contribute to waste reduction and enhance resource efficiency, ultimately underscoring its beneficial impact on environmental sustainability.
