Supporting lecture planning for part-time students with a video syllabus
Technological advances, demographic shifts, and changing business models require constant employee skilling. This leads to an increase in students who work as well as employees who study to further enhance their skills. Therefore, the area of Work-Life-Study Balance (WLSB), which focuses on balancing the commitments from work, study, and life, gains momentum.

So far, the needs of working students have been overlooked in research. That is the reason why this paper’s goal is to determine if it is possible to provide a syllabus in a higher education program that supports Work-Life-Study Balance for part-time students.
For this purpose, lecture planning and its requirements for part-time students were analyzed to determine how planned courses impact students’ WLSB. With a design science research approach, 10 factors were identified from the literature and enriched with part-time and lecturer interviews. Those 10 so-called characteristics were built into a video syllabus artifact, which was further improved and changed to a OneSlider.
Results about the artifact indicated that nine out of 10 characteristics support WLSB and lecture planning. The study also found that peak hours were considered more important than overall workload. Also, the study found that institutional support from environment is not adding value to part-time students when planning lectures. Furthermore, most of the students identified grading as an important factor due to outside commitments as well as group assignment choice, personal preferences, and workload.
