The widespread predicted introduction of so-called “emerging technologies” brings along opportunities and threats for Swiss businesses. However, research on the perception and preparedness of businesses for emerging technologies is rare. This knowledge might result in blind spots and missed opportunities alike within Swiss businesses. Therefore, this thesis investigates the perception of IT experts and business managers regarding potential threats associated with various emerging technologies and the readiness of businesses to deal with these threats.
This thesis investigates this topic with two main approaches. First, a comprehensive literature review provides both, a knowledge base for the topic of emerging technologies and investigates the current state of research conducted on the topic of technology perception. Second, through a quantitative survey with members of Swiss organizations and businesses the current understanding and perception of emerging technologies is investigated more broadly, as well as particular emerging technologies in more depth.
The survey was designed to identify potential disparities between the perception of emerging technologies within Swiss businesses and the current state of knowledge within academic literature. The small survey did not find any major disparities. However, the survey showed that participants find emerging technologies highly relevant to their businesses and are aware of potential threats related to these technologies. The results also indicated that some businesses only feel somewhat prepared for these threats and that cybersecurity measures might not be sufficient in all organizations. Especially within subtopics of already somewhat established emerging technologies, such as IoT and smart working security, a trend of underestimating security risks was found. Meanwhile, concerns about quantum computing were understood to be more of a future topic that is not quite relevant today. The thesis concludes by highlighting the importance of the topic and identifying topics for further research.
