Gamification in the medical field

This thesis project aims to improve the onboarding process for residents at the Psychiatrische Dienste Graubünden (PDGR) clinic in Switzerland by utilizing gamification elements in a mock-up app. The introduction focuses on the historical evolution of games and their expansion into various domains, including business applications. The problem statement identifies challenges faced by PDGR residents during onboarding, such as cultural differences and the complexity of the Swiss healthcare system. The thesis statement proposes that gamification elements can enhance the onboarding process by bridging cultural barriers and closing the knowledge gap in the healthcare system. To address the research questions, a qualitative approach is employed. It involves six interviews, five which are with residents of the PDGR, who have varying degrees of seniority within the clinic. The sixth interview is with a gamification expert. The users are tasked in completing a questionnaire to identify their user type. This is the basis for identifying gamification elements. After, the collected data is analyzed to identify connections between cultural challenges, the Swiss healthcare system, and gamification elements in the onboarding process.
