Kino Onik, a cinema located in Oensingen, Switzerland, introduced an online service on their website that allows customers to purchase personalised “Star of Fame” certificates. These certificates can be customised with names, icons, logos and text. However, the current ordering process is outdated and cumbersome, relying on a basic web form. Customers must fill in text fields corresponding to numbers on a sample certificate image. After submission, emails are sent to Kino Onik staff who must manually generate invoices, design certificates, handle payment, print and ship orders.
An iterative, phased approach was followed comprising goal analysis, requirements gathering, market research, prototype creation, development and testing. The implementation was done on the WordPress-based WooCommerce platform due to its flexibility and Kino Onik's existing infrastructure. Analysis was conducted on both existing plug-ins (Kickflip) as well as developing a custom solution. The custom plug-in enabled advanced conditional logic, dynamic pricing, anti-spam protection, instant PDF download and automated order processing. Key criteria were non-recurring costs, security and UX.
In summary, the ordering process was successfully enhanced through new features and automation, addressing limitations of the previous system. This improved customer experience, operational efficiency and met the defined objectives. Next steps include finalising policies, pricing alignment, print testing and resolving plug-in limitations before launch. The insights furnish Kino Onik with information to optimally improve their Star of Fame service. The custom plug-in satisfied all requirements but demanded ongoing maintenance, security updates and bug fixes. The Kickflip plug-in, despite limitations, was a more sustainable choice once its bugs are addressed. The journey provided comprehensive analysis of the research questions through practical explorations. The resultant solutions offer different trade-offs for Kino Onik to make informed decisions balancing customer experience and sustainability.
