The clients supply chain is a system in a cross-functional organizational setup consisting of procurement, transportation, warehousing, production and customer services. The company is facing inefficiencies and high costs due to a lack of end-to-end visibility of the product flows. This is common nowadays as more and more organizations face challenges with their supply chain management. There are many tasks such as, demand forecasting, supplier management, inventory management, and logistics that all need to be performed and work together in order to create a truly efficient supply chain.
A literature review was conducted to analyse various methods of visualising the supply chain and supply chain processes. Databases such as Google Scholar and IEEE Xplore were utilized to search for academic papers on approaches to modelling processes. Criteria were defined in collaboration with the client, with which the modelling options were to be evaluated by. Could the product flow be visualised? Could the costs & processing times be shown? Were bottlenecks identifiable? These criteria were used to evaluate the options. The strengths and use cases of each modelling option were documented.
A table was created, showcasing how each option did or did not fulfil the criteria. Ideally, the modelling approaches serve as a standardized way of visualising the processes so that different teams can model their processes and are able to share this information with others. This improved transparency should in theory make it easier for people to collaborate and work on improving the processes together. The introduction of a standardized way of visualising the processes can allow teams to analyse them and better identify bottlenecks that must be addressed. Potential benefits can be increased efficiency and reduced costs. It was highlighted in other sections of the paper that supply chain simulation tools are evolving and can offer many benefits. Therefore, tools such as digital supply chain twins are recommended to be further implemented as they offer many benefits in the field of supply chain management. Overall, the project was successful and should provide the client with an starting point to model their processes.
