Standardized interface for individual window production

In recent years, there has been a shift towards increased digitization and automation of processes in the fenestration industry. In the case of Erne AG Holzbau, a subsidiary of the Erne Group, the urgency is to bring the current individual window process in line with today's digitalization.

There is also a lack of an accurate overview of the entire process, and Erne's customer requirements have not been researched. There is no clear indication of how the customer envisions the new ordering process. Besides the challenges and urgency, there is relatively little structure in the individual-window process. This paper aims to create more transparency by answering the following research question: "Is Erne's current process of individual windows suitable for attaching interfaces? What should the new process look like?"
As a first step, research is conducted on possibilities for optimizing the current process and integrating a new ordering process. Interviews will then be conducted with the affected departments at Erne to collect primary data about the process and structure. The collected findings are presented as an IS-Process, and the first improvement approaches are identified. A TARGET process was created, and the possible interfaces and the ordering process were designed with an integrated web tool for the re-seller.
The analysis results show that Erne could adapt some steps in the IS process. Before considering the web tool, the optimizations must first be introduced around the existing process. This will bring the current work to a standard from which future steps can be planned. Once the IS process works optimally, it is possible to move towards the TARGET situation step by step. The last step comes when the interfaces to the existing systems/programs have been introduced, and they work without any problems—introducing an automated ordering process with a web tool. With the introduction of an automated ordering process, which only requires less manual intervention by Erne in a few cases, not only is the ordering process simplified and accelerated for the customer, but the employees of Erne are also relieved and can concentrate on the essential tasks. The core change of the automated ordering process consists of the web tool that includes a configurator. For the TARGET situation to work well, Erne must invest money in creating the interfaces and the web tool, and the employees must be trained.
