Last year, the interest in automation software and citizen development increased as other parts of the Baloise group pushed forward with other automation platforms. Baloise Asset Management bought an automation software called Automation Hero beginning last year to provide their employees with a tool to automate processes. Thus, the difficulty is finding synergy when everyone uses different tools and getting the employees interested in automating their processes.

The paper is split into three main parts. The first part compares different central automation platforms with the platforms used in the Baloise Group. The thesis provides an overview of various tools and their functionalities. Secondly, a process is automated with Automation Hero. Finally, the last part concerns the employees and their stance towards process automation and if they might be interested in automating processes as citizen developers.

While many specialized automation platforms on the market have different advantages and disadvantages, this paper explores the more common, larger platforms. When compared, these show no considerable differences in their functionalities, but some do stand out because of their completeness in terms of features. Nonetheless, deciding what tool could be used group-wide and fit the different Baloise departments' requirements is difficult. Microsoft Power Automate seems like a reasonable solution as a Citizen Development tool, mainly because it is already rolled out to every employee device. Automating processes involves essential steps like process identification, cost-benefit analysis, and implementation. Therefore, a concept with specific standards for the various stages makes sense in a bigger company like Baloise. It becomes easier to prioritise, plan and, finally, implement processes. Contrary to the public fear, the employees of Baloise Asset Management do not expect to lose their jobs due to increased levels of process automation. They instead expect less repetitive and more sophisticated tasks as a result and are therefore very interested in learning how to automate processes.
