The client, has engaged FHNW for a Bachelor’s Thesis project to research current trends in information technology and to develop an updated data management maturity assessment. The basis for the updated assessment will be the contractors data management maturity questionnaire, it shall be updated to reflect current trends in information technology.
Therefore current IT trends which impact data management of an organization have been identified and an analysis of the existing questionnaire has been made. Further, it was analyzed in which way the identified IT trends could have an effect on data management, and a recommendation of an updated maturity assessment questionnaire has been developed. To reach the proposed research goal, literature on the subject has been reviewed, a reference framework by the Data Management Association (DAMA) has been analyzed and compared to the data management framework developed by the contractor. Based on this analysis a requirement analysis on big data, one of the identified IT trends, has been made. In the context of big data the data management trend of Social MDM has been identified and the requirements of which were mapped against the contractors data management framework. Based on the mapping an updated maturity assessment questionnaire was developed in collaboration with the engaging party.
In conclusion a data management maturity assessment, questionnaire and evaluation, has been developed for the client. It provides a concise overview on the current status of data management maturity of an organization in relation to the identified IT trend, and highlights the current level of maturity in terms of this technology and identifies gaps to a required level of maturity. Nevertheless, the assessment provides the basis only in order to perform further in detail investigations on the contracting organization in terms of the identified IT technology. Benefits to the client and deliverables were: Updated client questionnaire with current IT Trends and first batch of responses A scientific paper on how the questionnaire was developed including a determiniation on how the current IT trends have been identified.
