Due to the rapidly increasing number of incoming Chinese tourists annually, some smaller shops, such as local souvenir shops and restaurants, experience a delay in processing transactions when a large group of tourists are in a rush to conduct their payments. It is assumed that it would be beneficial to many shops, hotels and restaurants in the tourist regions to implement the Chinese mobile payment services in those areas. To understand the opportunity and the potential outcome, the research will answer the following questions: What is the preferred payment method of Chinese tourists? How is the current market reaction to the possibility of the implementation of Chinese mobile payment services?
The author conducted the paper in a data triangulation manner, that is, she gathered multiple types of sources, including books, journal articles, online documentations, speeches and websites. In addition to the literature reserach both quantitative research in the form of a questionnaire, and qualitative research through interviews were choosen. The combination of these methods ensures that the perspectives of all the different stakeholders (Chines tourist, local shops, institutions) are included in the thesis.
Looking at the Swiss market, traditional payment methods are still in a dominant position. However, retail businesses in the Lucerne area showed an overall positive attitude toward modern mobile payment systems and would like to give it a try. The only issue encountered is the technical aspect. From the perspective of Chinese tourists, the preference towards Alipay or WeChat Pay, the payment methods which they are familiar with, is evident.
