Health management in small enterprises: Supporting employees alongside the mental health journey

In recent years it became clear that mental health will gain ever-higher importance in our society. Many people are experiencing or witnessing mental health issues, however, only a few know how to provide the needed support. The stigma sometimes prevents access to necessary support.

Psychological health management in smaller companies currently still lacks recognition. They often do not have the resources and knowledge to tackle this problem. The support of affected employees, nonetheless, should not be neglected. Absenteeism due to mental illnesses brings along financial and administrative consequences. This should be prevented and hence an employer should know how to minimise harm and support employees with mental health problems. Followingly, the thesis aimed to figure out how support options may look like with keeping the price in mind.
The knowledge for the support suggestions was gained with primary and secondary research. First, literature was researched for the theoretical background. A group discussion with eleven employees of Nyfeler Holzwaren AG helped to understand their opinions about support options and the associated fears. The follow-up survey provided information about how a larger group thinks about the recommended possibilities. Afterwards, two interviews with expert institutions, Pro Mente Sana and Proitera, were conducted. These three primary research methods provided valuable insights from different angles.
In the end, a strategy for the support of employees could be developed. Several measures were discussed in the course of the thesis. Many of them could be used as preventive measures or could be suggested when supporting someone with problems, nevertheless, no specific measure can be recommended. Every person, as well as the mental illnesses, are different and thus no general solution can be provided. In general, it could be recommended to recognise changes in the behaviour of the employees and then ask if there are any issues. The employee should then have the possibility to talk about the problems in a comfortable setting. The place for such a first aid discussion should be chosen carefully and enough time should be taken. In this discussion, listening is very important. Suggestions about how to proceed further could be made but if the mental illness is more severe a diagnosis and recommendations of treatment should only be made by a specialist. Therefore, the concerned person should be encouraged to seek professional help. It could be offered to support this step and help them find the appropriate treatment option.
