To become a data-driven company, a Swiss private bank has started to implement a data governance project. The company has formulated several project goals. For example, it wants to have a clear data lineage, set up data governance processes, create a unique point of truth for data in the form of a data catalogue, allocates data ownership, and adhere to regulatory compliance. Now, the author of the thesis was tasked with the conception, development, and implementation of data governance processes.
In a first section, the fundamental theories are described. Namely, the topic of master data management and data governance are explained in detail. For the practical task, a 3-Phase model has been developed. The model aims to guide process development through three stages. The first stage starts with the analysis of the underlying processes, requirements and needs of involved stakeholders. Then, data governance processes are derived and developed in a second phase. Finally, the processes are implemented on the technical level with a tool in the third phase.
With the implementation of several data governance processes, one of the specified goals by the client could be answered. One large aspect was the automation of process steps for these data governance processes. With the tool, a certain level of automation could be achieved. Furthermore, the thesis served as a pilot for the development of data governance processes, as no data governance processes were established so far. To facilitate further developments and integration, learnings and experiences have been documented carefully. In addition, the previously described 3-Phase model serves as a potential approach model for future developments.
