Platform Evaluation and Mortgage Offer Tracking Application Conception

The Mortgage Offer Tracking application runs on the IBM Domino platform, which must be replaced. As part of this paper, a concept for the new application is developed. In addition, a platform evaluation is conducted in order to find a new suitable platform.

Baloise Group launched the program Digital Workplace late in 2018. One of the goals of this program is to replace the IBM Domino platform. As part of the Digital Workplace program, a migration plan has to be developed for all remaining applications provided on this platform. The division Bank SoBa is using the Mortgage Offer Tracking application provided on this platform to manage mortgage provisions and control the performance of the sales representative body. As a separate project, the division intends to replace the mortgage management application where the functionality of the Mortgage Offer Tracking application might be integrated.
The thesis consists of two main objectives. First, a platform-independent concept was developed for the Mortgage Offer Tracking application, which takes into account the existing and new requirements of the stakeholders. The requirements were determined using the elicitation techniques system archaeology and interview. In the second phase, a scoring model-based assessment was conducted to compare the potential platforms on which the application could be hosted. Finally, the result of the evaluation was translated into a recommendation to be used by Baloise as a basis for decision-making for selecting the best suitable platform.
As a result of the platform evaluation, two scenarios are proposed. In the short-term scenario, it is assumed that the functionality will be integrated into the future mortgage management application. In this scenario, the proposal is to continue running the Mortgage Offer Tracking application on the IBM Domino platform. This scenario aims to present the legacy application as a web application allowing to remove the dependency on the IBM Notes client. IBM Domino as the hosting platform is the most cost-efficient approach and allows to cover the essential functional and non-functional requirements. In this scenario, additional development effort is required to migrate the application to the future mortgage management application. If Baloise does not intend to integrate the functionality into the new mortgage management application and seeks for investment on a permanent platform, then the long-term scenario with the platform SharePoint is recommended. The result of the platform evaluation reveals that apart from IBM Domino, SharePoint is the most economical option. The application concept developed serves as the basis for the subsequent development project.
