The objective of this master thesis was to formulate a mapping model for formal communication in connection with remote working. This artefact was primarily designed for new hires and new remote workers who can use the model as a tool to understand which communication channels can support their communication purposes while working remotely. This paper provides an overview of the various types of communication, organisational communications channels and tools, remote working and the onboarding process. Based on the information gathered from literature research, an artefact that links the types of communication to communication channels and tools was developed. The developed artefact was then introduced to selected experts working at Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)to evaluate the mapping model for formal communication. Based on the insights gained from SBB’s employees, the artefact was then adapted to their needs and refined.
