Business Intelligence (BI) dashboards are considered a key tool for data-driven decision-making in organisations. However, practice shows that dashboards often fail to reach their full potential. A major reason for this is insufficient data literacy and a lack of BI-specific knowledge on the part of business experts, which makes collaboration with BI specialists difficult and leads to ineffective use of BI solutions.
The aim of this master's thesis is to investigate how the development of data literacy and BI skills among business experts can contribute to a more effective use of BI dashboards by creating a common understanding with BI specialists. Methodologically, the thesis is based on a qualitative study with interviews with BI or data experts from various organisations, on observations of business experts while using a dashboard, as well as on the design, implementation, and evaluation of a targeted training programme.
The results show that key challenges in working with dashboards lie particularly in communication, the formulation of requirements, the interpretation and critical analysis of data, and the lack of a common understanding between business experts and BI departments. The training programme developed therefore contributed to raising awareness of critical data interpretation and data-driven questions, as well as to a better understanding of dashboard structures and backend basics. At the same time, training measures alone are not sufficient to ensure a sustainable improvement in BI usage. Success is highly dependent on individual prior knowledge, organisational structures and management support. The study concludes that targeted training programmes are an important prerequisite for more effective use of BI dashboards, but that they can only achieve their full effect in combination with organisational and cultural factors and through application in everyday work.
