Traditional certification formats often lack engagement, practical application, and adaptability to diverse learning styles.
To address these issues, the study employs a Design Science Research (DSR) methodology to conceptualize, design, and evaluate a gamified training application tailored explicitly for aspiring Product Owners. Grounded in the Octalysis Framework, the developed artefact uses motivational game mechanics to encourage sustained learning engagement, promote SCRUM-specific competencies, and enhance knowledge retention. Through iterative development cycles that include expert interviews and user-centered feedback, the mobile-first prototype evolved into a role-specific and interactive training tool. Key features of this application include adaptive quizzes, business-case simulations, progress tracking, and in-app feedback systems that reflect real-world SCRUM challenges.
The findings demonstrate the application’s significance in bridging the gap between abstract agile theory and practical digital learning experiences. The research also highlights the potential for broader use across SCRUM.org roles and suggests pathways for future research, particularly in scaling gamified training solutions to enhance organizational agility. This thesis provides a validated design artefact and offers practical insights into effectively using gamification for targeted, flexible, and motivating SCRUM education.
