A User-Friendly Approach to Design and Implement Constraints for Ontology- Based Models of Building Energy Management Systems

The smart building industry is rapidly evolving, emphasizing the need for efficient communication and collaboration among building energy management systems (BEMS) and system engineers, modelers, as well as data users. This master thesis supports this by focussing on the suggestion and development of a user-friendly approach to design and implement RDF constraints for ontology-based models of BEMS.

The research process followed the design science research strategy, involved identifying requirements and use cases for the approach, suggesting a concept, and developing a software artefact that integrated the suggested approach into a functioning system built upon the Agile and Ontology-Aided Modelling Environment (AOAME). The approach emphasizes user-friendliness through the visualization of SHACL constraints while a shapes model editor forms the core of the approach. The study demonstrates the application of ShapeVOWL, a visual RDF constraint notation, implemented in AOAME, to aid domain experts at EMPA in validating ontology-based models for BEMS.
While the evaluation indicates positive responses, the study acknowledges limitations in the technical implementation, calling for further integration and enhancements in AOAME. Future work is proposed to broaden the evaluation with other BEMS experts, integrate additional functionalities into AOAME, and extend the application of the approach to other domains or RDF constraint languages. Despite identified limitations, the research contributes to the practical application of knowledge graphs in the BEMS domain and serves as a foundation for future endeavors in user-friendly RDF constraint modeling.
