As renewable energy sources become more prevalent, the electric power system faces challenges due to the intermittent nature of these sources and the shift from centralized to decentralized power generation. The digitalization of the electric power system and the resulting technological advancements are crucial for achieving a sustainable and resilient energy future. Among these advancements, smart energy services have emerged as a promising development.
In the literature, smart energy services have been addressed from a rather individualistic, isolated perspective, focusing on product-related aspects or specific features. There is only limited research on smart energy services in the context of the energy transition. To address this gap, this master thesis investigates the types of smart energy services and the extent to which they can mitigate the challenges arising from government-initiated energy transition activities.
This master thesis proposes an integrated smart energy services framework, providing electricity utilities, policymakers, and practitioners in the electricity sector with a holistic approach to understanding smart energy systems in the context of the energy transition.
