The fast progress of generative AI, as demonstrated by models such as OpenAI's DALL-E, prompts interesting questions regarding the essence of creativity. Creativity, traditionally considered a characteristic exclusive to humans, includes the qualities of originality, innovation, and cultural relevance. This study explores the potential of AI, namely DALL-E, to exhibit true creativity by assessing its capacity to generate new and original images.
The study used a combined methods approach, integrating theoretical analysis with actual examination. The thesis begins with an analysis of the current literature on artificial intelligence, creativity and emergence. This analysis provides a conceptual framework that helps to understand the creative capabilities of AI. A series of experiments were then conducted with DALL-E using different prompts to assess its ability to generate original images. These experiments covered a wide range of topics, both common and unusual, and required the model to creatively combine and redesign multiple ideas.
The results suggest that although DALL-E shows certain elements of creativity, such as the ability to combine and explore ideas, it does not fully achieve true transformative creativity. The model demonstrates its capacity to combine various ideas and styles, resulting in the creation of unique and visually appealing images. Nevertheless, the outputs of the model frequently depend on recognizable patterns and components from its training data, which restricts its capacity to generate entirely unique products. This research adds to the current discussion on machine creativity, emphasizing the capabilities and constraints of AI models such as DALL-E in imitating human creativity.
