The monastery currently relies on showcase displays for collections. However, this approach, characterized by limited interaction and fixed behaviour patterns, may result in a less engaging experience, causing a higher cognitive load and reduced attention. This thesis addresses the underexplored heritage site with the objective of identifying the requirements and functionalities for the design of an AR application. Leveraging AR technology, the project seeks to enhance the visitors' experience by providing additional information about the frescos.
To gather information and insights for defining the requirements and functionality of an AR application, this paper employs qualitative research. This approach involves a thorough examination of existing literature on AR, including peer-reviewed articles and documented projects. The identification process also incorporates insights from domain experts knowledgeable about early medieval wall paintings in the Raetia Curiensis region, as well as technical experts who draw on insights from similar mobile AR applications on the market to provide valuable insights for best practice.
The study successfully defined the requirements and functionalities for the design of a feasible AR application. Additionally, the project accomplished the development of a working prototype, using developer tools to implement some of the identified functionalities, explore, and demonstrate the potential of AR technology in providing richer information and increasing user engagement at the Convent of St. John in Müstair. AR contributes to economic, experiential, social, cultural, historical, and educational values in museum settings. The findings of this thesis concludes that AR technology has the potential to address the challenges faced by museums in effectively showcasing cultural artifacts and engaging visitors. The future of AR may involve the integration of other technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), to create more immersive and interactive experiences for visitors. Despite technical limitations and other concerns like gimmickry and distraction, the thesis paper concludes that AR has a strong capability in enhancing museum visitors’ experiences by providing engagement, visualization, interactivity, and additional information.
