Success Factors of an Intranet for an International SME-Enterprise

In today’s ever-changing business world, intranets are applied for various intra-organizational purposes such as internal communication, change management, and knowledge management. However, organizations often neglect the importance of intranets as they are only used and applied internally.

Primeo Energie, an energy supplier active in Switzerland and France, has renewed its external communication channels to better align with the corporate strategy focusing on internationalization and growth. However, the organization’s intranet has been overlooked as it is currently only available in German and is technologically outdated compared to the external communication channels. Therefore, this thesis focuses on developing a general overview of the current state of Primeo Energie’s intranet to identify relevant success factors and formulate applicable recommendations for its enhancement.
The research was initiated by a review of academic literature regarding intranets and international SMEs and complemented with primary research methodologies, including a description of the intranet, semi-structured expert interviews, and an employee survey that incorporates factors of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Information System Success Model (ISSM). Synthesizing the results of the applied methodologies and attributing them to the identified factors from the TAM and ISSM served the later formulation of applicable recommendations to ameliorate Primeo Energie’s intranet.
In total, 25 recommendations particularly addressing the “Information Quality”, “System Quality”, and “Perceived Ease of Use” of Primeo Energie’s intranet were formulated. As a result, the identified recommendations should favorably affect the “Perceived Usefulness”, “User Satisfaction”, and “Intention to Use” of Primeo Energie’s intranet. The most critical recommendations for Primeo Energie seem to constitute the offering of the intranet in multiple languages, resolving the issue of unavailable, outdated, and redundant content, increasing the integration of the intranet with work-relevant information systems and applications, and defining and communicating the core purpose of the intranet. Besides the recommendations, four technologies applicable to the modernization of Primeo Energie’s intranet were explored by briefly introducing them and conducting a cost-benefit analysis incorporating quantitative and qualitative measures. Future steps for Primeo Energie and its intranet constitute an in-depth investigation of user needs from various departments and functional areas as their attainment seems critical for the successful renewal of Primeo Energie’s intranet.
