A tool for effective onboarding using the learning compass

The lack of a proper onboarding process has created low retention rates in many companies. Although there are onboarding processes to help newly hired employees, these are not well-structured, and not all the information can be found in one place. This leads to dissatisfaction among the employees and decreases the retention rate of employees. This research aims to improve the onboarding process of the newly hired by integrating the learning compass into the onboarding named onboarding compass. The four elements of the learning compass – skills, knowledge, attitudes, and values are discussed and used in the onboarding compass. The research follows Design Science Research and conducts a qualitative analysis to collect data through semi-structured interviews. The data for this research is collected by interviewing experts working in the project team within the pharmaceutical industry to collect information about the problems they faced during their onboarding process. With the gathered information, the research focuses on developing a tool, an onboarding compass, to help newly hired employees to understand the onboarding process and improve their learning process using the four elements of the learning compass. The tool will be evaluated by conducting interviews with the experts. The results of the interview show the need for such a tool for onboarding where everything is in one place.
