Hermes and Agility: Combining these methods within the Swiss Post

Todays business environment is increasingly dynamic. For development projects these dynamics mean rapidly changing requirements. Traditional project management methods follow a waterfall approach and cannot accommodate for these changes. To address these dynamics, agile project management methods such as Scrum have been developed. However, especially in larger corporates switching from waterfall to agile is accompanied by many challenges. Therefore, the goal of this work is to integrate agile methods into the waterfall framework Hermes (a framework developed by the Swiss Government). Possible strategies have been gathered through interviews, an online survey, and a literature review. This resulted in a guideline tailored to beginners as well as advanced users. This guideline contains a theoretical introduction followed by examples from a proof of concept study conducted at the technical department of the Swiss Post. What remains to be addressed in further studies, is the enforcement of roles and responsibilities and the implications on change management. Finally, the thesis statement: “A supporting guideline combining Hermes and agile methods should support the project management approach within the technical department of the Swiss Post” could be verified.
