Gender disparities persist in both STEM positions and entrepreneurship, with a notable majority of male entrepreneurs worldwide. Women entrepreneurs encounter unique challenges, including funding, networking, and work-life balance. This study centers on female STEM founders in Switzerland, aiming to explore their experiences, challenges, and contributions to entrepreneurship.
Firstly, a comprehensive review of existing literature on entrepreneurship, female entrepreneurship, and STEM was conducted. For the qualitative aspect, interviews were held with female STEM founders in Switzerland, using a customized questionnaire. The goal was to gather insights into their experiences and views as entrepreneurs in Switzerland's STEM landscape. These interviews were transcribed, summarized and discussed. Finally, recommendations are provided and future research possibilities are outlined.
Findings indicate that women remain underrepresented in STEM and entrepreneurship globally. Despite progress, men still dominate the field. This gender disparity is reflected in challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, including funding, networking, and overcoming feelings of inadequacy. Additionally, entrepreneurship education at a young age can ignite an entrepreneurial spirit. Challenging bias and gender stereotypes requires self-reflection, while role models and media coverage can inspire change. Networking events and initiatives are vital, encouraging active engagement in entrepreneurship and STEM. Emphasizing key skills and knowledge, promoting resilience and negotiation skills, and offering startup support initiatives are essential for female success. While Switzerland excels in entrepreneurship, funding hurdles remain. Governmental efforts, such as installment payments and dedicated funds for female founders, could support startups. Overall, this study emphasizes the need for an inclusive ecosystem that offers equal opportunities, access to finance, and mentoring, enabling female entrepreneurs to drive innovation and growth on a global scale.
