How does studying abroad impact graduates' career paths?

As a large exporter of international students, China has actively issued a series of policies to encourage Chinese students to study abroad and return to China after decades of reform and opening up. However, there are few studies on the impact of studying abroad on the career path of Chinese graduates.

Does studying abroad affect the employment field of Chinese international students? What aspects of studying abroad will affect the employment field of those students? The authors have excogitated three research questions which will be answered during the research: • What is the preferred destination for Chinese students? What are the reasons for their choice? • What are the differences in career paths between alumni who studied abroad and who did not pursue international study experience? • What is the evidence of 3 + 1 project graduates’ career paths?
Firstly, the authors selected six target destinations for analysis based on the proportion of Chinese students studying in various countries. Secondly, the authors investigated the career situation of Chinese international students and ordinary Chinese students through elaborating two types of questionnaires. At the same time, the author actively contacted six graduates of the FHNW 3 + 1 exchange program. Through the interview, the authors collected their employment status and feedback on the project.
In the preferred destination analysis part, finding indicates that each country has relatively special advantages for international students. Students could choose to study in different countries according to different motivations.The client could clearly compare the advantages and disadvantages of Switzerland and other popular countries. At the same time, the results strongly suggest that studying abroad has influence on the career path of Chinese international students, the client could specifically understan d the impact of studying abroad on the graduate career. In particular, through in dept h interviews and analysis of the graduates in the 3+1 program, it could give the client a general understanding of the career paths of the 3+1 program graduate students.
