The thesis tackles how an organisation can manage information. Information is one of the most important resource of an organisation. Many organisations are not aware how their information is structured, managed and distributed within their infrastructure. One approach to manage information is the implementation of an Information Landscape in a model based manner.
The thesis investigates the information flow within a complex infrastructure based on services. In addition, dependencies, roles and basic mechanisms are outlined for information services. The thesis elaborates the model based representation of information. The base of the modelling is the NATO Architecture Framework (NAF). Based on NAF, a customised and simplified approach is developed for the context of the armed forces. It establishes an overview over business-information, called information products, that form a logical and high level abstraction to information. Examples of specific information products are business-reports or flight tracks.
The thesis introduces a model for an information landscape. This model enables an organisation to categorise information into information products. In addition, the model allows navigating through the information landscape and drilling down form a superior level to a detail level of information products. The model introduces a straightforward approach to connect business process, information and applications. The introduced approach reduces the complexity and enables the business to model their process efficiently. In addition, the introduced approach can be conducted as iteratively modelling workflow. The thesis contains a feasibility analysis with the NATO process for medical evacuation to demonstrate how the model of the information landscape can be unitized.
