Based on the experts' statements, a theoretical framework was developed for identifying possible success factors for vulnerable repatriated person when founding a company. The following topics were considered: •Founder or team •Timing or business opportunity •Business model •Health •Family environment •Skills •Finances
The selected success factors were elaborated on in more detail in a theoretical section. To carry out a practical investigation, semi-structured qualitative expert interviews were conducted with selected beneficiaries and with a consulting company regarding the identified factors in Kosovo. The answers from the quantitative interviews were summarised, compared, analysed and evaluated.
The empirical research showed that the general success factors of the nature of the founder or team as well as timing or business opportunity were decisive for the sustainable success of the start-ups. Moreover, it was a significant advantage if the repatriated person could rely on a network. In addition, family businesses were more likely to be successful if family members invested their energy, knowledge and, above all, financial resources in the start-up. Furthermore, it was a significant advantage if the founder could fall back on equity capital. All selected success factors were taken into account in the Caritas Switzerland’s self-employment programme and business plan. However, the aspect of differentiation of the product or service could have been taken into account more. To increase the chances of success of start-ups, it may be possible for Caritas Switzerland to support previously existing companies with a final push.
