This thesis aimed to find what initiatives are already in place and what opportunities Basel offers for blockchain technology. The starting point was that the Basel region is centred in the middle of Europe and offers a multi-faceted environment for various high profile institutions and business organisations. Industries such as Life Sciences, Finance and Logistics are important in the area. Therefore this thesis had the aim to discover whatever is going on in the Blockchain area in this region. What initiatives are already in place and where is potential or what is missing.
This bachelor thesis attempted to analyse the prerequisites and existing actors/initiatives of Block-chain in the Basel region. First, a literature research was performed. Subsequently, problem-centred interviews were conducted with various industry representatives and experts. In order to achieve high quality, the interviews were summarized and sent to the stakeholders for confirmation in an ITR process (Interview Transcription Review). The collected insights were evaluated and compared to derive recommendations for the deployment of blockchain solutions in the Basel region.
The principal findings of the study are that there are some initiatives and actors in the region of Basel but that there is a lot of unused potentials. This was determined through literature review and problem centred interviews. Various different chances and recommendations were collected. A better understanding of the blockchain “phenomenon” is provided. Understanding blockchain technology or DLT would be beneficial for further adoption in the region. Interest in blockchain solutions is there but it is still treated cautiously. According to the results, the ecosystem has the necessary prerequisites for the further adoption of blockchain solutions, but so far it is only sporadically exploited. Start-ups and small companies have developed their first blockchain solutions in 2021, which makes it interesting to see what impact this will have on the Basel region in the near future.
