Oracle organizes its technology events among other things on Meetup, where groups arrange gatherings in which people take part. The company wants to place their own events of its groups "Swiss Data Circle" and "Code4Fun" in the best possible way and to thereby expand the two groups.
This project was meant to help to better position Oracle on Meetup firstly with the aid of an analysis on a graph database and secondly with a sociological analysis on topics, such as event organization and people gathering. These analyses were intended to bring recommendations for future event organizations.
To perform the analysis on the graph database, data was fetched from Meetup, filtered, processed with the graph database and visualized to recognize and document new knowledge. These steps were carried out in an agile process.
On the other hand, the sociological analysis was conducted by the means of literature research.
The analyses on the graph database show what the current Meetup trends are regarding locations and topics, as well as which events are currently in demand and who the competitors of Oracle's groups are. Finally, Oracle can work on these things, which could increase the popularity of its events.
Within this project, a tool has also been developed to carry out the analyses. Oracle can now use this tool to extend it with further new analyses if needed.
The sociological analysis has brought a new perspective to the work. Among other things, it showed how a Meetup group can be sustainably expanded. For instance, Oracle should get a good mix between bonding attendees (attendees with a good connection to the community) and bridging attendees (attendees with a weak connection to the community) at the events.
