Master Data Governance: MDM Governance and Operating Model for Ronal Group

Data quality management is a significant part of any organisation, however nearly all IT systems have “dirty” data. The success of a master data management program lies in data governance. The master data governance provides the base to address the business issues that are related to master data quality.

Ronal Group is a globally operating production company for the automobile industry, with a rather complex and historically grown IT infrastructure. In 2015 Ronal Group launched a master data management initiative, that aims at harmonising data throughout the business units to continuously improve the data quality. Consequently, the need for a comprehensive master data governance concept was recognised. The goal of this bachelor thesis is to recommend a scalable operating model for Master Data Management with defined roles, responsibilities, and tools that are business unit neutral and applicable group-wide.
In the first step, the as-is-analysis was performed, during which the necessary interviews were performed and internal documentation studied. Secondly, the extensive literature review on the topic of master data governance as well as overall master data management was carried out. Finally, documentation with the recommended master data governance model and action plan was created.
The client received a master data management governance model, with defined organisational structure, which will provide a clear chain of command for making strategic and tactical decisions and will provide authority and enforce accountability. The organisational structure of the MDM governance model was adapted to the existing structure in the company. Corresponding roles and responsibilities were complemented with RACI model. In addition to the governance model, documentation includes recommendation on how to establish an organization-specific KPI to measure master data quality. Finally, the client received a ten-step action plan on how to formalize the master data management in the organisation in order to make it an enterprise-wide effort.
